Mediamax presents the translation of The Guardian’s article “Trump ballroom donor to lead state department’s $‌200m Armenia fund.”

Konstantin Sokolov, a Russian-born investor living in Chicago, will become the chairman of a new US State Department fund that will manage more than $200 million to create a trade corridor to Central Asia, including investments in transportation, energy infrastructure and key minerals. The Guardian learned this from its sources. The State Department confirmed his appointment on Friday.

Sokolov is one of 36 donors (21 corporations and 15 individuals and family foundations) who, according to Donald Trump, have donated a total of more than $350 million to the construction of the White House “ballroom.”

According to a study by Public Citizen, two-thirds of the hall’s corporate donors have received government contracts. The amount of Sokolov's donation was not disclosed.

He has never held public office before. According to campaign finance records, Sokolov donated more than $12 million to Republican campaigns and political groups during Trump's second term. He was previously a modest donor to Barack Obama, donating $3,600 to his 2008 campaign.
