US President Donald Trump said that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni begged him to take a photo with her during the G7 summit in France, TASS reported.

“She’s probably glad I spoke to her. I didn’t have to talk to her. She was begging me to take a photo with her. She wanted to take a photo with me so badly. I could have done it without her, but I felt sorry for her,” he said in a telephone conversation with a journalist from Italian television La7.

The Italian Prime Minister immediately responded to Trump’s statements.

“Some things require an immediate response. Donald Trump’s statements are completely fabricated. I’m shocked, I don’t know why the US president is behaving this way towards his allies. This is not the first time this has happened. I can only say that it’s a pity that he doesn’t show the same determination in the fight against the enemies of the West. "Neither I nor Italy ever beg for anything," Meloni said in a video posted on X.

In turn, Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of his planned visit to the United States.

"President Trump's serious and insulting remarks against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are an insult to all of Italy. In this regard, I have decided to cancel my visit to the United States, which was scheduled for June 21 and 22," he wrote on X.

Recall that earlier Trump accused Meloni, like all European leaders, of unwillingness to help on the issue of Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
