Russia is preparing for a new big counterattack. Economist:
Russia is preparing for a new major offensive on the front, it may begin in the summer. The Economist writes about it. According to the magazine, Ukraine's ability to contain it now inspires less confidence than it did a year ago.
"Ukraine cannot simply blame its allies. He too is guilty of mistakes. One of them is the failure to replenish the army with manpower. Russia is preparing for a new wave of mobilization, hoping for the next big success. But attempts to recruit new soldiers in Ukraine are still stuck in the coils of the democratic process. Having no money and fearing unpopularity, President Zelensky was not too keen on achieving results," writes The Economist.
The newspaper also notes that the construction of fortifications by Ukraine is taking place "with great delay".
"To some extent it is explainable. The government still dreams of a new counteroffensive and fears that the current front line could turn into something like a border, cutting off a fifth of the country and cutting off most of its landlocked land. The idea that this line could be the basis for future peace talks is exactly what Zelensky wanted to avoid. But the danger is now so great that it is the least worst option for Ukraine. Excavators have started moving in recent weeks, and the "dragon's teeth" are already coming out. It should have started much earlier. Pray it's not too late," concludes The Economist.
