Serzh Sargsyan is one of the few people, not only among the leaders of Armenia, but also among the individuals I have met in my life in general, who publicly admits his mistake. This is a quality that is almost unheard of in our political culture. Unfortunately, we are often ready to go to the point of destruction, just so as not to say, “Yes, we made a mistake here.”
I have never considered this a weakness. On the contrary, this is a sign of inner strength, political maturity, and human greatness. Serzh Sargsyan is the only leader of Armenia who, under pressure from the people, left power without leading the country to internal conflict and bloodshed.
Serzh Sargsyan’s mistakes, of course, do not disappear just because he admits them. But admitting a mistake has value when it leads to a consequence: not to repeat the same thing, not to give in to ambition, to rise above personal and team interests, and to be guided exclusively by state and national interests, and not by arrogance and stubbornness in denying reality.
I am grateful to him for his principledness, honesty, and inner strength.
P.S. Eight years ago, on this very day, I sat in Serzh Sargsyan’s official car for the first time in my life. That same car took him home from Baghramyan 26 for the last time. One day I will definitely tell you about that day, how the enthusiastic people saw Serzh Sargsyan off, not yet realizing what awaited him and the country. Eight years later, in another country and under completely different circumstances, I was again in the same car with Serzh Sargsyan.
Former Armenian Ambassador to the Holy See Mikael Minasyan wrote about this.
