Attempts to cleanse the liver of toxins at home are not only useless, but can pose a health risk, said therapist Oksana Pivovarova in an interview with Gazeta.ru.

Symptoms of liver dysfunction include yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes, as well as itching, nausea and vomiting, both after eating and on an empty stomach. In advanced conditions, small spider-like veins may appear on the skin, but to accurately assess the liver condition, it is necessary to undergo biochemical tests.

"Deviations from the norm can indicate serious diseases, for example, viral hepatitis or cirrhosis. The treatment of these and other diseases should be carried out only under the supervision of a doctor. Traditional methods can lead to serious consequences, including death," Pivovarova warned.

Often, methods of "cleansing the liver of toxins", such as special vegetable diets and heating the organ, can cause serious problems.

"These actions can lead to the dilation of the bile ducts and thereby contribute to the formation of small stones in the gallbladder or formed in the gallbladder, as well as the development of inflammation of the liver or gallbladder. If the indicators are normal, then it does not make sense to "cleanse the liver of toxins", the doctor noted.
