Today is September 1, the Day of Knowledge, Writing and Schooling. Classes have resumed in schools and other educational institutions in Armenia.
September 1 is celebrated around the world, including in Armenia, as International Knowledge Day.
September 1st is the start of the new school year, first and foremost for pupils, students, teachers and lecturers. Traditionally, on that day, solemn ceremonies are held in schools dedicated to the new school year. First-graders are welcomed into schools with a special ceremony.
The holiday has been celebrated since 1984, approved by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated June 15, No. 373-11 "On declaring September 1 a national holiday - Knowledge Day."
September 1st is celebrated as Knowledge Day in Armenia, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, as well as in the Czech Republic and the Baltic countries.
The tradition of starting the school year on September 1 has ancient origins. In the 4th century, on May 20, 325, the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea was convened by order of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine I the Great in the city of Nicaea, Byzantium, where a decision was made to start the new year on September 1.
According to tradition, Aristakes brought the decisions of the Council of Nicaea to Armenia and presented them to Gregory the Illuminator. The latter introduced them into the dogma and ritual of the Armenian Church. And since all schools operated at that time attached to churches, the new academic year also began to be celebrated on September 1.
