Recently, especially among users who promote government propaganda, I often see this phrase:
"When Levon Hayrapetyan was in prison, why didn't you speak up? After all, he had done so much for the homeland."
With this expression, they are trying to justify or perhaps justify why today there is no need to talk about the unjust arrest of another national benefactor, Samvel Karapetyan.
But let's remember clearly:
1. Levon Hayrapetyan was arrested in Russia in 2014, and his case was pending in the Russian legal system. It was almost impossible for Armenia to take any real steps. However, even under those conditions, people gathered in front of the embassy and raised their voices.
2. In those years, Facebook had not yet become a tool for shaping public opinion. Political issues were not raised on Facebook, because in 2014, Facebook was simply a place for entertainment.
Now that national philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan is under illegal detention,
To say, "Well, we didn't come out during Levon's time, so we don't need to now" is at least illogical. If we now understand that we should have been more demanding during Levon Hayrapetyan's time, then we must now prove it with action so that in a few years we don't have to repeat the same phrase, already about another benefactor or someone who is simply unjustly imprisoned.
Justice should not depend on who spoke or remained silent last time.
Let us live in the present, let us not repeat past mistakes or shortcomings, but on the contrary, let us be the masters of everything that has been promised to us: a free, just, and democratic country...
