Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on July 21: “Today, Armenia receives both diesel fuel and gasoline from Azerbaijan. This is a significant contribution to ensuring Armenia’s energy security,” FIP writes.
He also noted that the supplies are a significant contribution, especially “in the current conditions of difficulties in exporting and importing oil products.”
Expressing gratitude to Germany for supporting the peace process, Aliyev noted that Azerbaijani-Armenian relations are being normalized, and the initialing of the peace agreement and the signing of a joint declaration in Washington put an end to the more than 30-year conflict.
The Fact-Checking Platform has investigated the volumes of gasoline and diesel fuel imported from Azerbaijan to Armenia in light of Aliyev’s statement.
Accordingly, according to available official data, in the first quarter of 2026, Azerbaijan's share in total gasoline imports was about 5%, and in the case of diesel fuel, about 16%.
Supplies of gasoline and diesel fuel from Azerbaijan to Armenia began at the end of 2025. Therefore, we took as a basis for the study the annual 2025 and the most recent available official statistical data for the first quarter of 2026.
What was the share of Azerbaijani gasoline in 2025?
According to official statistical data of the State Revenue Service of Armenia, in 2025, about 220 thousand tons of automobile gasoline worth 207 million 838 thousand US dollars were imported into the republic.
The volume of imports from Azerbaijan to Armenia amounted to 1215 tons, worth 873.4 thousand US dollars.
Last year, the main suppliers of gasoline for Armenia were Romania, Egypt and the Russian Federation, which together provided about 82% of imported gasoline.
Supply picture by country:
Romania — 62.8 thousand tons (28.5%)
Egypt — 60.4 thousand tons (27.4%)
Russian Federation — 56.7 thousand tons (25.8%).
Smaller shares are also held by Bulgaria (7.7%), Cyprus (5.4%), Greece (4.3%), and Iran (0.4%).
Azerbaijan is in penultimate, 7th place among the 8 supplying countries in terms of import volume; it accounted for about 0.6% of total gasoline.
