The sale of weapons to Azerbaijan has strained relations between Armenia and Belarus, which are considered partners within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Hetq writes.
For years, Armenian officials have expressed public outrage over the fact that Belarus sells weapons to Azerbaijan, with which it is engaged in a long-running military conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
Internal circulation documents leaked from Belarus show that some Belarusian weapons were used by Azerbaijan against Armenian soldiers in Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020.
The Armenian government is particularly concerned about Belarus’ arms sales to its enemy, as both countries are members of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Despite being members of the same alliance, the Belarusian private arms manufacturer Tetrahedron has helped Azerbaijan upgrade its air defense (AD) systems, according to leaked emails and internal reports.
The leaked documents were obtained by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and its partners Hetqn and Bureau Media, which was founded by exiled Belarusian journalists.
