The peace established between Armenia and Azerbaijan on August 8, 2025, with the support and personal participation of U.S. President Donald Trump, has opened up new opportunities for our region—the South Caucasus.
In this regard, I would first like to address what President Trump referred to from this podium two days ago. Yes, I have stated—and I reaffirm now—that the breakthrough leading to the establishment of peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan simply would not have been possible without President Trump’s personal involvement and his resolute commitment to achieving peace.
The implementation of the TRIPP project will be of historic significance for the Republic of Armenia. For the first time since the early 1990s, Armenia will gain railway connections with Azerbaijan, and thereby with Russia, Central Asia, and China. However, it must be emphasized that following the Peace Summit of August 8, 2025, Azerbaijan opened its railway to Armenia, and we now have a rail connection with Azerbaijan via Georgian territory.
The implementation of the TRIPP project will establish a direct rail link between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as rail connections linking different parts of Azerbaijan via Armenian territory and different parts of Armenia via Azerbaijani territory; this is because Armenia lacks a rail connection between its northern and southern regions—which is practically feasible only through the territory of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of the Republic of Azerbaijan—while Azerbaijan lacks a rail connection with its Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic—which is practically feasible only through the territory of Armenia. In the near future, we will restore the railway sections in Meghri and Yeraskh—which existed during the Soviet era but were subsequently destroyed—and the railway connections I mentioned will be opened.
However, this will also be of immense international significance, because alongside the construction of these railways, we anticipate the opening of the Armenia-Turkey railway.
Combined with the TRIPP project, this could become one of the most important events in international logistics in recent decades, as it will establish a new railway link connecting China, Central Asia, Turkey, and the European Union. All of this opens up another pivotal opportunity for international logistics, as the restoration of the railway connection between Armenia and the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan also re-establishes rail links between the Persian Gulf and the Black Sea. This is a crucial nuance, as it demonstrates why and how the implementation of the TRIPP project promises significant benefits for all countries in our region—benefits that could become a cornerstone of long-term stability and peace, particularly between Armenia and Azerbaijan. "After a conflict spanning some 35 years, we are now discussing—within the framework of the TRIPP project—the construction of pipelines, power transmission lines, and roads alongside an east-west railway; this will enable not only the Republic of Armenia but the entire South Caucasus to become a 'Crossroads of Peace,'" Pashinyan said.
