Facebook's justice towards Samvel Karapetyan was unprecedented, it was anti-democratic: Aram Vardevanyan

According to Aram Vardevanyan, a member of businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan's advocacy group, democratic values are either real or formal.

According to him, the most important of democratic values is a truly independent judicial system.

"The simple mechanism for evaluating the judicial system is the issue of choosing or refusing to detain in criminal cases. In our country, those in power talk about democratic values, but in reality they are afraid of those values."

The clear and visible Facebook justice against Samvel Karapetyan by the head of the executive branch on June 17 was unprecedented and anti-democratic. Such an attempt at political persecution has never been seen in any country, and predictably, the latter has been detained since June 18.

Under democratic values, detention, which is the most extreme measure (ultima ratio), cannot be used so often and so unjustifiably, so disproportionately. One can ask any judge or prosecutor in a European country how many cases they know of when a person

1) has not been previously discharged,

2) has never hidden from examination,

3) has no motive to obstruct the investigation of the case (remember that the accusation is merely a videotaped interview),

4) is accused of an alleged crime of medium gravity and will be detained.

"The answer is clear: there is no such case. As soon as such a case occurs, that European country will simply cease to have anything to do with democratic values," Vardevanyan wrote about this.
