Famous lawyers Jeffrey Robertson and Amal Clooney may join Samvel Karapetyan's defense

Famous lawyers Jeffrey Robertson and Amal Clooney may join the defense of businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan. Samvel Karapetyan's defense council has issued a statement.

"Prominent Australian-British lawyer, legal scholar and scholar Geoffrey Robertson (King's Counsel, KC) has expressed his deep concern regarding the excessively harsh criminal procedural measures applied to Samvel Karapetyan, emphasizing the political context of the charges brought against him."

According to Robertson, the use of detention during the preliminary investigation stage, accompanied by false and insufficient justifications presented by the competent authorities, and unreasoned decisions adopted by the courts, contradicts the principle of the rule of law and the guarantees provided for by international law.

Mr. Robertson is currently considering the possibility of joining the international team of lawyers defending Mr. Samvel Karapetyan and supporting the team's submissions to international organizations.

"In the further stages of the representation at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the involvement of Ms. Amal Clooney in the process may also be formally considered. Jeffrey Robertson is the founder and head of Doughty Street Chambers. He previously represented Armenia’s interests with Amal Clooney in the case of legal liability for genocide denial. Jeffrey Robertson is also known for his great commitment to the issue of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the protection of the rights of the people of Artsakh," the statement says.
