The “Iravunk” newspaper writes: “On December 12, the government adopted a decision according to which special elections for the Gyumri Council of Elders will be scheduled. Considering that the decision comes into force on February 20, and the elections are held on Sunday, then, most likely, the Gyumri Council of Elders elections will be scheduled for March 30.

In essence, the Local Government Law could have found a way to extend the time for early elections a little longer, when there is a temporary acting mayor in the person of Sarik Minasyan, a non-partisan, former deputy elected from the "Bright Armenia" party, and the authorities would definitely have found a way to ensure a quorum for the mayor. But why did Pashinyan decide to go the way of early elections anyway? Two important circumstances are being put forward behind the scenes in politics:

  1. Nikol Pashinyan realizes that the mechanisms that were introduced to maintain Yerevan city government will not work in the event of national elections. Therefore, ahead of the national elections, it is important to test a new mechanism and see its result or consequences so that in the event of a possible snap national election, he does not face an immediate defeat.

  2. "By organizing snap elections for the Council of Elders in Gyumri, Nikol Pashinyan is simply checking the rating of the political force he leads to understand whether it is worth going to snap parliamentary elections or not."
