Yesterday it became known that the rector of the Pedagogical University, Srbuhi Gevorgyan, was arrested in the framework of a corruption case. Along with her, the vice-rector and other employees of the university were also in the Anti-Corruption Committee.
Diana Markosyan, director of the Pedagogical University's Media and Public Relations Center, said in an interview with 168.am that she did not have much information about what happened.
"I only know that this morning, investigative actions took place at the university, they interviewed several employees as witnesses, and then our rector was invited to the Anti-Corruption Committee. That's all I know and then I read that nonsense, which is essentially disinformation. We ourselves do not have any information at this time," Diana Markosyan noted.
Later, the Anti-Corruption Committee confirmed the information in an interview with 168.am.
In response to our question, they said that the rector and vice-rector of the Khachatur Abovyan Armenian State Pedagogical University were arrested within the framework of the criminal proceedings conducted by the Anti-Corruption Committee.
"The latter are accused of creating and leading a criminal organization consisting of various university employees, committing waste and fraud on a particularly large scale, as well as receiving bribes. A number of other university employees have also been arrested as part of the criminal proceedings," the committee noted.
The preliminary investigation body had submitted a petition to the court for the arrest of Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan.
The court considered the petition and denied it.
"During the court hearing, we were representing the interests of the rector of the Pedagogical University with three lawyers: myself, Robert Khachatryan, and Hovhannes Harutyunyan. The court, examining the investigator's motion, rejected it, applying alternative measures of restraint," said the rector's defense attorney, Karen Gabrielyan.
When asked whether Srbuhi Gevorgyan had accepted the accusation, she replied, "No, she did not."
In an interview with 168.am, the Anti-Corruption Committee stated that house arrest and a 20 million dram bail were chosen as alternative preventive measures against Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan, and an alternative preventive measure was applied against the Vice-Rector, taking into account that the latter gave a confessional statement.
