Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador Amir Saeed Iravani stated at a special session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOS) that the full responsibility for the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the resulting global economic consequences lies with those who unleashed war against Iran and their regional partners. This was reported by the Mehr news agency.
Iravani spoke at a special session of the ECOSOS, which was entitled “Protecting Energy Flows and Supplies: Promoting Global Development through International Cooperation”. He stressed that the international community should honestly confront the root causes of the current instability in the energy market, and not simply try to eliminate its consequences.
The ambassador noted that Iran has suffered for two closely related reasons. According to him, in less than a year, the country has twice become the target of illegal aggression, which is a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law. As a result of these attacks, he noted, thousands of innocent civilians, especially women and children, were killed, as well as large-scale destruction was caused to sensitive civilian, economic, energy and ecological infrastructure, the grave consequences of which will be felt even long after the end of military operations.
Iravani identified four factors that, in his opinion, lie at the root of the current crises and instability. The first is that instability did not arise out of nowhere.
In his formulation, this is the consequence of military escalation and aggressive actions by Israel and the United States - steps that have increased tensions in one of the most strategic energy and trade regions in the world, undermining both regional and global stability.
Second, direct strikes on Iran’s oil, gas, and petrochemical infrastructure have caused serious economic and environmental damage to the entire Persian Gulf region.
Third, lasting regional security cannot be achieved through confrontation or reliance on foreign states; it can only be achieved through dialogue, mutual respect, recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and genuine regional and international cooperation.
Iravani stated that Iran remains committed to constructive engagement and is ready to make efforts to restore stability, energy security, and normal conditions in the Strait of Hormuz, provided that aggression and military escalation cease and the maritime blockade is lifted.
