Twenty-seven years ago, by the mercy of Almighty God and through the will and choice of the nation, His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, ascended the Apostolic Holy See of the Armenian Church. This was noted by Father Asoghik, a member of the Brotherhood of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

"Having enjoyed the full confidence and endorsement of his blessed predecessors—Catholicoi Vazgen I and Karekin I—and possessing a distinguished record of devoted and highly fruitful service to the glory of the Armenian Church, His Holiness Karekin II was entrusted with the weighty responsibility and duty of shepherding and leading the Armenian people, both in Armenia and in the Diaspora.

And today, I wish to recall once again the prophetic words of the great Hrant Matevosyan, which he dedicated to His Holiness on the occasion of his consecration and enthronement:" "In this hour of our bloody nightmare—while finding a difficult joy in your worthy appearance upon the throne of your clear-sighted and valiant ancestors—and for the sake of us all as well as for your own sake, we pray that you may never—God forbid—end up, like so many of your long-suffering forebears, as the sole and solitary figure standing against all our calamities. Your community of Armenian writers is full of hope that your royal mind will remain bright, your step confident, and your hand vigorous. May you strike your scepter upon this sacred Araratian soil, and may that scepter become the cornerstone of our common ancestral home—a home from which light and warmth, love and trust shall flow forth, and which shall banish and drive this hour of the 'red nightmare' far, far away."

"Amen—so be it, so be it!" he wrote.
